Have you ever witnessed an artist's transition from creating relatable comedy sketches to venturing into the world of travel? Lalit Choudhary, an accomplished digital creator, Mr India 2016 finalist, and MTV Love School season 3 winner, underwent such a remarkable transformation. In this exclusive interview, Lalit opens up about the inspiration behind his shift, his journey as a travel influencer, and the valuable experiences he gained along the way.
You were doing these amazing, relatable sketches, and suddenly, I noticed the shift towards Travelling. How did that happen?
I still enjoy creating funny content, but that's not all I wanted to do. I wanted people to see how I see the world when they visit my profile. I started going on solo trips a while back and realized how beautiful it is. So, I decided to share the essence of solo travel through social media.
How has your journey been from Mr India to MTV Love School to now being a travel influencer?
The journey has been crazy, beautiful, and adventurous, from Mr India to MTV Love School to Travel Influencing. My life goal has always been to do what makes me happy at the moment and to follow my heart's desires. I embrace all the adventures because we only have one life. I want to live it to the fullest and have a lifetime of crazy adventures by the time I reach 85.
How was your reality show experience? Would you be interested in participating in another reality show, and if so, which one?
I had so much fun during Love School. It brought back that competitive feeling from school days, that exhilarating sensation of wanting to win. It made me feel alive and refreshed. If given a chance, I would love to be a part of 'Khatron Ke Khiladi' because of the thrilling tasks involved.
Everyone showcases picture-perfect travel stories. Do you have any not-so-perfect experiences to share?
Behind the picture-perfect views influencers upload on Instagram, there is often a lot of struggle to reach that point. I want to show the struggle and the feeling that comes with it and then reveal the picture-perfect view. That's how life works; it tests you to the fullest before rewarding you. I have had many not-so-picture-perfect moments while travelling, such as taking a 12-hour journey on a public transport bus in a foreign country in the middle of the night (where I didn't even understand the local language) or experiencing a bike breakdown in the remote areas of Himachal Pradesh. Each moment has taught me something valuable, for which I am grateful.
What is the most challenging part of being a digital creator?
The most challenging part of being a digital creator is capturing everything on camera, which is practically impossible. I strive to capture as much as possible, but in reality, I film only about 20-25% of my experiences.
What have been the most memorable travel experiences you've had as an influencer?
One of my most memorable travel experiences was visiting Bhutan for the first time. Being in a completely different country on a solo trip, I felt no one knew me. However, while hiking Tiger's Nest, several groups recognized me, giving me a wonderful feeling. To be recognized by people in a different country was truly beautiful.
What are your tips for aspiring travel influencers looking to grow their online presence?
Be as real as possible and not just focus on showcasing beautiful landscapes. Show your journey to those gorgeous landscapes. When you connect with people on a personal level, it automatically resonates and has the potential to go viral. Trust me on that.
We have all heard Ranbir's famous dialogue - "Mai udna chahta hoon, bhagna chahta hoon, bas rukna nahi chahta." Do you have a similar mantra or dialogue that resonates with you?
I love that dialogue. While I haven't considered a similar dialogue, I would say, "Never stop doing anything new in life." Every month or week, ask yourself, "What was the last thing you did for the first time?" And always answer that question with a resounding "Yes."
Can you share any behind-the-scenes challenges or funny incidents that have occurred during your travels?
One incident that comes to mind is not necessarily funny but has always been scary. I have a habit of booking the wrong tickets. Now, I double-check my tickets at least 10 times before making a payment. There have been moments when I realized I booked a flight ticket for two months later instead of the upcoming week, and it gave me a heart-attack moment.
They say you gain a lot of experience while travelling. Do you agree? If yes, what has been your experience as a solo traveller?
Yes, I completely agree that travelling provides invaluable experiences. Every trip teaches me something, and the most important lesson I've learned is that when we confine ourselves to just one place, we think that's the whole world. But it's a BIG NO. The world is vast, and there are countless things to see and experience. We laugh with our hearts, cry, get irritated, and feel grateful. It's a beautiful journey.
You are also a marathoner. What's your next target?
Yes, I am a marathoner. My next target is to participate in the Ladakh Marathon, the world's highest-altitude marathon. After that, I plan to participate in all the major marathons happening in India this year.
Lastly, what message do you have for the travel community as a fellow traveller?
I want to say, Be safe and go extreme! Embrace every moment of your travel journey.
