Vir Das Clinches International Emmy for Best Comedy: Historic Win for Indian Stand-Up

In a historic moment for Indian comedy, actor and stand-up comic Vir Das secured the International Emmy Award for the Best Comedy category. This marks his second nomination and the first-ever win in this prestigious segment. The 51st International Emmy Awards Gala, held at the New York Hilton Midtown, celebrated the global achievements in television. Hosted by US magician Penn Jillette, the event recognized exceptional talent from around the world.

Vir Das, known for his roles in films like 'Go Goa Gone' and 'Delhi Belly,' achieved this milestone with his stand-up special, 'Vir Das: Landing,' available on Netflix. The show is about the intricacies of being genuinely global while in search of a place to call home. Expressing his joy, Vir Das shared pictures on social media, captioning them, "For India, For Indian comedy. Every breath, every word. Thank you to the @iemmys for this incredible honour." This victory cements his position as the first Indian comedian to receive such a prestigious accolade.

Das's previous stand-up special, 'Vir Das: For India,' was nominated in the best comedy category at the International Emmys in 2021, making this win even more significant. Competing against international shows like 'El Encargado' from Argentina and the French series 'Le Flambeau' season two, Vir Das's 'Landing' emerged victorious, showcasing the global appeal of Indian comedy. In addition to Vir Das's triumph, renowned producer Ektaa R Kapoor was honoured with the International Emmy Directorate Award, recognizing her substantial contributions to the arts and entertainment industry. The International Emmys, conducted annually by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, aim to acknowledge the world's best television content.
