- This policy aims to prevent hate and fake news on social media
The Uttar Pradesh government has implemented a new social media policy to prevent hate and fake news from social media platforms. According to this guideline, any post seen as objectionable on social media may result in tough legal action, with penalties ranging from three years to life imprisonment. The cabinet approved this new policy during a meeting led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Preventing Hate and Fake News
This new policy aims to put a stop to hatred and wrong information spreading on social media. The government thinks some people use these platforms the wrong way putting the country's unity and integrity at risk. By enforcing strict penalties, the government hopes to make the online world safer.
New Rules for People Earning from Social Media
In addition to regulating objectionable content, the UP government has brought in a new rule for people who make money through social media. Those who create content and have a big following will now get paid to promote the government's work. The amount they get depends on how many followers they have. The new rule states:
Social media stars on X (Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram will receive monthly payments of Rs 5 lakh, Rs 4 lakh, Rs 3 lakh, and Rs 2 lakh, respectively. YouTube account holders would earn Rs 8 lakh, Rs 7 lakh, Rs 6 lakh, and Rs 4 lakh every month, based on four categories. The government has warned to take legal action against account holders who publish anything that is offensive, vulgar, indecent, or anti-national.
Showcasing Government Policies
The new policy includes provisions for publicizing the Uttar Pradesh government's initiatives and achievements on social media. The government plans to create a list of agencies and organizations that will make and share content, tweets, videos, posts, and reels about these initiatives on platforms like X, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
Sanjay Prasad, who heads the Information Department as Principal Secretary, believes this step will boost the visibility of government initiatives. He also thinks it will create jobs for people from Uttar Pradesh, both in the state and overseas.
