Sourav Dutta's Financial Faux Pas: Twitter Reacts to Car Loan vs. Investment Controversy
- Sourav Dutta faces backlash for his recent post on X
- He is known for sharing finance tips
- Invest in SIPs, don't buy a car
Sourav Dutta, a popular personal finance influencer, is facing backlash after a recent post on X. Known for sharing tips on savings and investments, Dutta's tweet was meant to offer financial advice but many found it “impractical.”
Dutta's Comparison: Car Loan vs. Investment
In his post, Dutta compared two financial choices for a fictional character named Ravi. He suggested that instead of paying Rs 20,000 per month for a five-year loan on a car worth Rs 10 lakh, Ravi should invest that amount in a Nifty ETF SIP. According to Dutta, this investment would yield Rs 17 lakh by 2030, while the car would only be worth Rs 4 lakh by the same year.

Instead, Ravi puts ₹20000/mo for 5 years in Nifty ETF SIP.
First decision gives him a car worth ₹4L in 2030.
Second decision gives him ₹17L of bank balance in 2030.
Life is about the choices we make.
Widespread Response Highlights Enjoyment Over Savings
Since the tweet was posted just a day ago, it has gained over a million views. However, the response has not been what Dutta expected. Many users argued that life isn't just about saving money, and they pointed out the importance of enjoying life.
Critics Emphasize the Practical Need for a Car
One of the strongest critics was entrepreneur Chirag Bhajatya, who highlighted the real need for a car, especially in emergencies. See the post here:

Called uber ola, they not functional. One relative said no because he was afraid of infection.
But Ravi has lakhs of money in bank.
Don't be like Ravi.
Go buy a car. Buy a small one.… https://t.co/ueKu9RAGRr
Others chimed in with similar sentiments. One user remarked, "Not everything in life is about saving money. Also, if everyone thinks like Ravi, then the economy won't grow, the stock market won't perform, and Ravi will not even make FD returns!"
Another pointed out the practical issue: "The problem here is that, when Ravi wants to go somewhere with his family at his convenient time without bargaining with the Ola or Uber fellow, he can't print the ETF papers, sit over it and ask it to fly. It will not take him anywhere."
Dutta's tweet sparked a bigger conversation about combining financial planning with the need for convenience and fun in life.
