Sharath Jois, Ashtanga Yoga Teacher, Dies While Hiking In US

Renowned yoga guru R Sharath Jois passed away in Virginia, US, on Monday, November 11. He was 53 years old.

Sharath Jois Passes Away in the US:

The Ashtanga yoga teacher from India's Mysuru died during his teaching tour across the US. His demise was confirmed by his sister Sharmila Mahesh and the University of Virginia yoga program manager John Bultman. He suffered a heart attack while hiking near the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

Jois was accompanied by around 50 students at Humpback Rocks when the incident took place. He reportedly became fatigued and sat on a bench before collapsing. The students made efforts to revive him with CPR, however, he was declared dead after the arrival of the emergency responders.

According to sources at the Sharath Yoga Centre on social media, Jois was expected to return to his native Indian city sometime in December to kickstart a new batch of classes. On the day of his tragic passing, he shared a video of his yoga class on Instagram.

Who Was Sharath Jois?

Sharath Jois was famous for his Ashtanga yoga workshops globally which were attended by thousands of yoga practitioners. He made efforts to spread the Ashtanga yoga style across the globe.

He was the grandson of K. Pattabhi Jois – a direct disciple of T. Krishnamacharya, who is recognized as one of the most influential and important yoga gurus of modern times.

He is survived by his mother, Saraswathi Jois, father Rangaswamy, wife Shruti Jois, and two children, son Sambhav Jois and daughter Shraddha Jois.
