The Supreme Court has announced its verdict about same-sex marriage on Tuesday. The five-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud unanimously ruled against legalizing same-sex marriage in India today. The bench also ruled in a 3:2 verdict against civil unions for non-heterosexual couples. It comprised Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli, and PS Narasimha.

As per the reports in The Indian Express, the Chief Justice of India has left it to the Parliament to decide on the issue. The CJI and Justice Kaul batted for civil unions for non-heterosexual couples. The CJI mentioned that the SC cannot strike down the provisions of the Special Marriage Act (SMA) or read words differently.

Here's how the influencers reacted to this historic verdict;

Taking to Instagram, Sushant Divgikr aka Rani KoHEnur who is an active advocate of LGBTQ+ rights wrote, “To my Rainbow family, We are in this together. It is rather dichotomous that one has to fight for equality in a democratic nation but we must not give up. Sending everyone warmth and big hugs.” Their post has garnered mixed reactions and a user wrote, “Disappointed on the decision but change is hard and they have to give back our rights on the same-sex marriage act, more power support and love to the LGBTQIA family,” another commented, “In this together.”

We exclusively spoke to Anker Talwaar about the same, he said, “Honestly, I feel that as a society and as a country, we are not ready for same-sex marriages. I mean, I see marriage as an institution only collapsing in our country and it's going through, I won't say collapse, but marriage as an institution is going to transition where the concept of marriage and its boundaries are getting expanded and the definition of marriage is getting revised. So far, I'm talking about marriage in the heterosexual context. So, when the whole revolution happening and marriage institution is going through a revolution, I think it's a bit too early to legalize same-sex marriages and go in that direction. I don't think that we as a country or as a society are ready for the same-sex narrative. It will take a while.”
