- Acknowledging problems and solving them
- Don't always look on the bright side
- Don't ignore negative emotions
According to Coutinho's observations, five indications show when positivity goes into dangerous terrain. Emotional repression is the first red flag. Negative feelings can resurface later and cause much more misery if they are ignored or treated like unwanted guests.
Luke Discusses Toxic Positivity:
Discrediting other people's emotions is the second red flag. Those who are often told to "look on the bright side" despite having their challenges acknowledged may feel marginalized and disregarded. Validating other people's experiences—even when they conflict with our ideas of positivity—is a necessary component of genuine compassion.
Toxic positivity also includes dodging conflict and realism. Maintaining a "optimistic energies only" exterior could be alluring, but it doesn't deal with the deeper problems. Accepting criticism and taking on obstacles head-on might occasionally be essential for development and solutions.
Another red flag mentioned by Coutinho is the sensation that you have to keep up a happy front even when things go wrong. Not only does repressing real feelings detract from overall well-being, but it also makes it more difficult to build sincere relationships with other people.
Coutinho concludes by cautioning against the dangers of flimsy optimism. True optimism is accepting the ups and downs of life and realizing that it's acceptable to experience sadness, frustration, or rage occasionally. Acting cheerful when you do not merely cause emotional drain and detachment from the truth.
