Highlights
  • Kids under 7 aren't being difficult
  • Play, songs, and consistency are powerful tools
  • Connection > Control

If you've ever wondered why your young child seems to completely ignore the instructions, has frequent meltdowns, or constant struggles with patience and self-control, then you're not alone.

According to Tanya Mehra, the answer lies in the brain development—not in bad behavior.

The prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain wholly responsible for logic, reasoning, and impulse control, is still underdeveloped in some kids under 7 years old. So when a child doesn't listen, it's not defiance—it's actually the development.

Tanya greatly stresses that earning your child's trust is the real secret behind getting them to fully listen. And to do that, you have to actually speak their language: play, songs, stories, and consistency.

Try Tanya's Simple Tactics:

  • Play with them: Replace “Go to bed!” with “I'm Baa Baa the sleepy sheep- let's go!”
  • Sing to them: Instead of “Wash your hands now,” try to sing, “This is the way we wash our hands...”
  • Relate to them: Say, “I remember not wanting to stop playing for dinner too. How do you feel actually?”
  • Be consistent: Set clear routines like: “Two books and one song before bedtime- your choice!”

Children listen better when they feel more safe, seen, and connected. Trust actually grows when parents slow down, engage playfully, and stay all consistent—and that trust becomes the strong foundation for cooperation.

So the next time when your little one acts out, just pause, breathe, and remember: their brain is still growing—and so is their regular understanding of the world.
