Applying skin care products in the correct sequence is crucial as it not only helps with maximum absorption but also effectively improves the overall health of the skin. Dermatologist and digital content creator, Dr. Garekar breaks down the right way to layer skincare products for healthy, glowing skin

Basic Rule: Thinnest to Thickest

The general rule of skincare layering is to start with water-based products first and move towards products that have thicker consistency. This allows each product to penetrate properly without blocking absorption.

1. First: Face Wash

Start by washing your face, it's the most basic and essential step.

2. Toner, Face Mist

Apply toner or face mist post-face wash to refresh and prep your skin.

3. Undereye Cream:

For all the under-eye cream lovers, the application depends on the type of serum you use:

After Serum: If your serums fall under the hydrating category (vitamin C, Niacinamide or Hyaluronic acid), then apply under eye cream after serum.
Before Serum: If your serums fall under the exfoliant category (AHA, BHA, Retinod), then apply under eye cream before serum.

4. Serum:

If you use two serums, apply the one with a thinner consistency first, followed by the serum that has a thicker consistency.

5. Treatment skincare product :

If your dermatologist has prescribed a treatment product, then apply it between serum and moisturizer.

6. Moisturizer:

Apply suitable moisturiser and let it absorb.

7. Sunscreen:

Sunscreen application should be the last step of the skincare regime.

Makeup Application:

If you wear makeup, start applying it after your sunscreen has settled into your skin.
