As promised, we are here with the second part of an interesting chit-chat with RJ Malishka. In this segment, she discussed civic issues and the importance of the platform that one has.
Excerpts...
Your songs highlighting Mumbai's monsoon issues garnered significant attention. What motivated you to address these civic issues through your platform?
We all have a duty towards ourselves and the spaces we live in and work in. Mumbai is my first love that way and I feel very drawn towards talking about things that matter, things that can change our environment for the better, and justice in general. I also believe that leaders are servants of the people and year after year, seeing us people live with the consequences of no political will or even unawareness makes me mad. Plus I think humour and song, art, in general, is a great ways to highlight issues. I've heard people complain for years and I have first-hand witnessed what it does to a great city like ours. I have the platform and the voice and I believe more people should do this. It allows or rather demands attention to change. There is much power in the public's voice and it should be used to better our society is my strong belief.
How do you view the role of radio personalities and influencers in bringing social issues to light?
I think identifying what you stand for and would like to be vocal for and are passionate about (esp since you have the platform) is a must. I don't think every issue can be highlighted by singular people but yes the ones you feel strongly about and think you can help change perspective, you must.
I feel deeply for civic issues, for the rights of the people, and for communities building and growing together for the common good, and for animals. I use my platforms as and when I can to voice this.
When one is in a position to change perspective for the larger good and can mobilize thought and resources it's a blessing and a superpower. One must use it wisely.
Can you share any advice for young aspiring radio jockeys and actors who look up to you as a role model?
1) To actually get out of your own way and believe in yourself before others can start to.
2) To develop/evolve in whichever way you can.
3) To be self-aware as much as possible and to trust your gut and align towards being the best version of yourself.
But mostly to just have fun along the way.
