Dolly Singh: I Am Obsessed with Acting | Exclusive

Her every new project shows a new creative side of her. Her latest Instagram series is the proof.  She exclusively speaks to Jayveer Singh about her series, content creation process, and much more.

What inspired you to create ‘Best Worst Date Season 2' and what can audiences expect from the series? 

My inspiration for this whole idea has always been that, you know, as a creator I definitely love long-form videos. That's what I like to make, that's what I like to write, but long-form content doesn't work right, at least not on Instagram. So, I needed to find a way where I could have those ideas but still make it short-form and this idea to have a long idea but cut it down into episodes came to me during the pandemic and I actually dabbled into an experiment where I made this series called COVID Love Story, six episodes, one episode every day and I tried to see whether or not audiences are interested in a long story, a story that keeps going.
 
Will they come back the attention span is so small right now that I was worried that nobody's going to come back to watch episode two and, you know, they won't care but they did and they did so much that they pushed me into making a season two for the same and now that I had done two seasons of a show randomly like that I decided that I needed to go much bigger with this and I needed to make a show which is just overall highly produced content that is cinematic where I can also show my acting capabilities, my writing capabilities and all those things, you know, so Best Worst Date came about and I feel like rom-com is a genre that we all love to enjoy.

What can audiences expect from the series?

They can expect a lot of, like I said, rom coms. This season is a love triangle so there's a lot of confusion happening. They can expect a lot of beautiful, by the way, frames, and cinematography because we've really upped our game this time.
  
So, this time we've actually taken the risk of having longer, much longer episodes, three minutes and longer and they ate it up, you know. In fact, they were still requesting for longer episodes and have been requesting so that's been really nice.

How do you manage to juggle multiple roles such as acting, writing, and producing for your projects?

I think it's really fun because I want to do all of them. Over the years of content creation, I've realized that I love writing, bringing these ideas to life, and performing them. Acting has always been something that has been at the back of my mind as an obsession, so I'm glad it's coming around and it's coming out.
 
And I think even production, I have worked as a producer back in the day for IDiva, I was a producer there. So now that my own ideas involve that kind of production or involved high-end production, I like that I can, you know, bring that old production dolly and then just like rope her in and make use of that as well. So it's been really, really enjoyable and fulfilling to actually do these things.
 
Although at the same time, of course, it's like a lot on your plate and you have to do everything, but we're also doing it on Instagram. We're not making a movie here or we're not like doing a big thing where, you know, I can afford to have more people. So since, you know, the budgets are limited, the platform is not that big, it's still social media.

How do you come up with ideas for your content and what drives your creative process? 

I think most of my ideas are observational, at least in terms of my comedy and my sketches day-to-day. With an idea this big because it's like a show of course you know I had to think of multiple things keeping in mind there is a creative brain and then there is a business brain as well. So, you know while my creative brain wants to tell a lot of stories my business brain knows that some of these will not work on a platform like Instagram or social media.

So, I have to combine those things and make sure that the ideas that I am bringing to life on Instagram are the ones that are that have a chance to work on. And like I said initially rom com is a genre that I think most people enjoy so I wanted to play with that first because I felt it would be the first nice easy step to take before I go into maybe horror or thriller. But yeah rom-coms are nice and easy, breezy, light, and enjoyable in general.
