Welcome to our regional recipe series, where today, we embark on a culinary journey to Gujarat with Anahita Bhandari. In Gujarat, Thepla is more than just a flatbread; it's a beloved culinary tradition that's both delicious and nutritious.
Thepla, hailing from the western state of Gujarat, is a thin, flavorful, and slightly spicy flatbread that has won hearts across the country. Anahita shares her easy-to-follow recipe that allows you to recreate the magic of Gujarat's cuisine in your own kitchen.
To make 15-20 theplas, you'll need:
- 2 cups of whole wheat flour
- 2 tbsp of dried methi (or 1 cup of fresh methi, washed and chopped)
- 2 tbsp of oil
- 1 tsp of red chili powder
- 2 tsp of sesame seeds
- 1 tsp of grated ginger
- 1/2 tsp of haldi powder
- 1 tsp of jaggery powder
- 1/2 tsp of ajwain
- 1 tsp of dried mint powder
- Salt to taste
The method is simple:
- Mix whole wheat flour, spices, ginger, and sesame seeds.
- Knead a semi-soft dough using water and 1 tbsp of oil.
- Roll small balls of dough into thin theplas.
- Cook on a medium-hot tawa, flipping when small bubbles appear.
- Smear some oil or ghee, flip, and cook until done.
These delectable theplas are ideal for any mealtime and even make a perfect travel or college snack. Anahita offers a pro tip: some people add dahi (yogurt) to make theplas softer, but they won't last as long.
Now, you can savor the authentic flavors of Gujarat in your own home, thanks to Anahita Bhandari's delightful Thepla recipe. Whether it's for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, Thepla is sure to leave your taste buds craving for more. Enjoy this culinary adventure and embrace the rich heritage of Gujarat's cuisine.
