Did you know India's coffee journey actually started with a handful of beans smuggled in a beard? Chef Ranveer Brar takes us deeply through the captivating origin of Indian coffee, blending properly the myth, history, and the warmth of human hands. Here's why every sip of Indian coffee is truly special for us.
The tale goes that Baba Budan, after tasting a magical drink called coffee during his Hajj pilgrimage, smuggled seven sacred beans back to India—possibly in his beard or robe. These beans birthed the first coffee plantation in Budhangiri, Karnataka.
What makes Indian coffee exceptionally stand out globally?
It's grown mainly in Chikmagalur, Coorg, and Budhangiri—not on the flat plains like elsewhere in the world, but mostly in rugged, hilly terrains. This topography makes the machine harvesting almost impossible, so that every single bean is touched by human hands, giving Indian coffee a perfect soul and flavor like no other.
Grown mostly alongside the pepper, coconut, and betel leaf, our coffee picks up the layered and earthy notes that no machine-grown bean can actually replicate. It's sun-kissed, hand-harvested, and richly infused with tradition.
As Chef Brar perfectly puts it, “The story that starts with millions of hands does not always reach millions of mouths. But every sip of Indian coffee carries its own story.”
Next time you sip on a cup of Indian coffee, remember that you're tasting more than just a drink. You're also experiencing a legacy deeply brewed through many centuries, powered by the human hands, sun-kissed leaves, and a soulful intention.
Let's raise a toast to this Made in India masterpiece.
