If you are not feeling so great, having a bad time, or just want something hot and comforting, this pepper garlic rasam is exactly what you need. Food influencer Akshada Desai Lobo shares this easy recipe to soothe your body and soul during the cold winter months. Pair it with rice, and you have the perfect comforting meal!

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp peppercorn
  • 1/2 tbsp jeera (cumin seeds)
  • 2-4 cloves garlic
  • 1 cup tamarind pulp
  • 2 tomatoes, pureed
  • Water as needed
  • Salt to taste
  • A pinch of turmeric

Tadka:

  • Oil
  • Mustard seeds
  • Curry leaves
  • Red chilies
  • Hing-asafoetida powder

Method:

  • Firstly, soak the tamarind in hot water for some time. Remove the pulp squeezing after such soaking. The other two tomatoes need to be blended into a paste in between.
  • Roast the peppercorns and cumin seeds together in a pan. Once roasted, crush the same along with the garlic cloves to make a coarse powder. This will add a flavor and aroma to the rasam.
  • Place a pan over heat. Add tamarind pulp, tomato puree, and water to it. Season it by adding salt and turmeric. Allow the mixture to simmer over low flame; let its flavors blend together for some time.
  • Once the mixture starts to simmer, add the freshly prepared pepper-garlic powder into the pan and mix it well. Keep it over the flame for the next 5 minutes.
  • Heat some oil in a small pan and add mustard seeds. Once they start spluttering, add curry leaves, red chilies, and a pinch of hing or asafoetida. Stir the mixture and pour this hot tadka over the simmering rasam.
  • Your Pepper Garlic Rasam is ready! It can be eaten as a cozy soup or served over steaming hot rice for a great dinner.
