Mother's Day 2024: For the Mother's Day special, we have connected with renowned celebrity gut health and ayurveda coach Dimple Jangda to curate an exclusive diet plan for new mothers to lose postpartum weight easily. She has shared the holistic diet plan with us.
Postpartum, a woman's body goes through many changes, as she starts feeding and nourishing a new human, she must ensure to not get depleted and emancipated in the process. It's important to consume nourishing foods to ensure a healthy milk supply.
Recovery Process:
Ayurveda shares health protocols to follow postpartum to support the recovery process. Ensure to consume warm cooked meals like soups, stews, and boiled or steamed vegetables to get enough fiber in your system to aid the downward movement of waste from the colon and uterus. These foods are easier to digest and stimulate the metabolic fire while supporting weight loss.
Importance of Ghee in Daily Diet:
Ensure to include cruelty-free dairy in your diet to support the milk supply. Ghee which is known as clarified butter is the nourishing tridoshic food available in the kitchen. Ghee contains essential fatty acids, Vitamin A, K, and E which are fat soluble. Ghee is suitable even for those who are lactose intolerant as it doesn't contain casein and lactose which is separated during the hearing process. It also contains beta-carotene which supports the immune system and protects the body from oxidative stress. Ghee is rich in butyric acid and good fats which lubricates the GI tract allowing smooth evacuation of waste that may have built up during pregnancy due to abdomen distension. Add 3-5 tsp of ghee to your meals daily.
Nursing mothers should also include foods like kitchari which is a combination of rice, mung beans, and spices. It is easy to digest and helps balance the Doshas. Include warm herbal teas made with cumin, fennel, coriander, cardamom, and carrom seeds which promote breast milk supply, and stimulate the digestive juices contributing to weight loss. It also helps reduce bloating, indigestion, and inflammation from such symptoms.
A handful of Nuts Can Do Wonders:
You can also include a handful of nuts like almonds, walnuts, dates, prunes, raisins, and seeds like sesame seeds, for good fats, protein, and micronutrients. Ensure to soak nuts and seeds overnight. Dates provide energy and can be consumed throughout the day. Prunes help eliminate waste in the digestive tract and cure constipation symptoms. Also include vegetables like carrot, beetroot, spinach, celery, cilantro, and all leafy greens to promote iron consumption.
Which Fruits to Go For?
You can consume fruits like pomegranate and black grapes, stewed apples, and pears instead of raw, to prevent constipation. Avoid sour foods like lemon, tomatoes, tamarind and overnight fermented foods like kombucha, kefir, sauerkraut, pickles, idli dosa as it may cause the milk to curdle in the child's stomach and cause tummy aches for the baby.
Ensure to stay hydrated:
Ensure to stay hydrated and consume lots of water throughout the day, including juices like lemonade, cold pressed carrot beetroot juice, Pomegranate juice, and even buttermilk post meals. The faster you fix your digestion, the earlier you will be able to drop the postpartum weight.
Include spices in your diet like turmeric which helps reduce inflammation; ginger aids digestion, and reduces nausea and inflammation in the body. Fenugreek is excellent for improving lactation, faster healing for the uterus, and gynecological health. Warm spices like cinnamon, clove, and pepper can stimulate the Agni (metabolic fire) and aid weight loss while reducing inflammation and balancing blood sugar levels. Also, include hing (asafoetida) which eliminates bloating and improves digestion.
Panchakarma Treatment To Aid Weight Loss:
New Mothers postpartum, after their period has stopped can engage in a complete panchakarma treatment to aid weight loss. Abhyangam, a full body oil massage helps stimulate blood circulation and reduces Vata imbalance and postpartum symptoms like depression, sleep disorders, body aches, and pain, fatigue, and hair loss. You can also do yoga basti - a series of enema treatments including matra basti (medicated oil lubricant enema), and kada basti (complete detoxification of your gut), to eliminate waste and promote weight loss. Panchakarma therapy also helps with reducing stress, improving lactation, and reducing postpartum symptoms. You must also engage in Pranayam to help expand the lungs and bring the diaphragm back into place. During pregnancy, the diaphragm often moves up, and out of place causing shortness of breath.
Yoga, breathing exercises, ayurveda therapies, and a balanced diet will not only help with postpartum weight loss but will also help with healing the body, mind, and emotions allowing the mother to enjoy the new chapter of motherhood.
