A vital part of our everyday lives is sleep. It enables us to rest, heal, and maintain our health. A good night's sleep is necessary for a rested and refreshed wake-up. Yet, some habits can mess with your sleep. Manisha Mishra Goswami shares five things to avoid before bed to boost your sleep quality.
1. Heavy Meals
Eating large meals late in the evening can disrupt your sleep. The body works hard to digest meals, which causes discomfort and keeps you awake. It is best to consume your final meal at least 2-3 hours before bedtime to allow your body to digest.
2. Evening Exercise
Exercise is essential, but activities near bedtime may boost energy levels and make falling asleep more challenging. Try to conduct strenuous exercise at least three hours before bedtime. If you feel forced to exercise at night, gentle stretches like light yoga may help.
3. Arguments
Stress and anxiety will wake you up in the middle of the night. Engaging in a fight or tough conversation before sleep increases stress and inhibits relaxation. Try to stay away from argumentative situations before sleep and give your body the opportunity to relax and get over issues.
4. Bright Lights
Bright lights, especially from electronic devices, can impair your ability to fall asleep. The blue light from screens might deceive your brain into believing it is still daytime. Dim the lights or use softer lighting before bed.
5. Electronic Devices
Using phones, iPads, or laptops before bedtime might ruin your sleep. The use of these devices provides a large amount of light, which lowers the making of melatonin. Avoid them for at least an hour before going to sleep.
Avoiding these habits will improve your sleep and leave you feeling more relaxed in the morning. Good sleep is essential for overall health!
