Think mangoes are off-limits if you're a diabetic person or trying to lose some weight? Nutritionist Kiran Kukreja is here to totally bust that myth, and share how you can wholly enjoy this juicy fruit guilt-free!
Contrary to popular belief, that mangoes are the nutrient powerhouses, rich in vitamins C, A, E, K, and almost all B vitamins (except B12). They're also richly loaded with fiber and essential minerals.
With a glycemic index of about 51, mangoes cause a gradual rise in blood sugar levels, not the sharp spike that many fear.
Here are Kiran's top 3 tips to enjoy mangoes very wisely:
Watch your portions
Stick to half a cup of a sliced mango, which keeps your carbs in full check (~12.5g).
Pair with healthy fats
Add some nuts or seeds to slow the sugar absorption and balance your meal.
Choose a whole mango over juice
Juice lacks fiber and leads to the faster sugar spikes.
Important:
If your HbA1c is above 7.5 or you have really uncontrolled diabetes, always consult a healthcare professional first.
