Diabetes is difficult to manage, but with the right changes to your lifestyle, you can improve your quality of life. Dr. Siddhant Bhargava shares four simple methods to help your diabetes parents stay healthy and live longer.
1) Include Millets in Their Diet:
Replace rice and roti with millet such as jowar, bajra, and ragi. These grains have a low glycemic index, which means they do not induce sudden rises in blood sugar levels. Millets can help maintain blood sugar levels, lowering the risk of diabetic complications.
2) Eating Sweets Smartly:
Sweets can shoot blood sugar levels through the roof, but there is a way to enjoy them without any harm to your health. Ensure your parents eat sweets after a full meal. This will slow down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream and reduce the impact. Or get them to eat fiber-rich foods like vegetables or fruits before sweet foods because it helps prevent sugar spikes.
3) Avoid Only Carb-Based Meals:
A diet comprising of poha, upma, and idli is a staple. Only carbs can shoot sugar levels sky-high. Balance it out with a source of protein in the form of curd, paneer, or eggs, or healthy fats like nuts. This helps slow digestion and keeps blood sugar in check.
4) Walk After Meals:
Try encouraging your parents to walk for at least 15 minutes after every meal. Breaking down sugar in the body can be achieved through walking. This is because blood sugar spikes will prevent it, and, more importantly, it will become easier to care for one's self overall. This habit is easy to acquire, which brings about dramatic results regarding diabetes management.
Using these four simple tips—add millets, eat sweets with judgment, balance the meals along with proteins and fats, and walk after the meals—will help your parents suffering from diabetes lead a long, complication-free life.
