For many, yoga is synonymous with stretching, flexibility, and physical fitness. But according to Dr. Hansaji Yogendra, one of India's most renowned yoga gurus and Director of The Yoga Institute, this couldn't be further from the truth. “Yoga is not about touching your toes—it's about training your mind,” she explains in a thought-provoking conversation with Rajan Navani and BK Shivani on the Think Right Podcast.

"The Real Definition Of Yoga Is Mental Mastery"

Dr. Hansaji challenges the modern, fitness-driven perception of yoga, emphasizing that its true purpose goes far beyond physical movement. "Nowhere in the ancient texts does yoga refer to just asanas. The real definition of yoga is mental mastery—‘Yogas Chitta Vritti Nirodha'—which means gaining control over the fluctuations of the mind. Everything we experience—stress at work, conflicts in relationships, even health issues—stems from an untrained mind. Master that, and the rest will follow."

"Holding Onto Negativity..."

The deep connection between emotional well-being and physical health is often underestimated, but Dr. Hansaji highlights how the two are inseparable. “Stress doesn't start in the body—it starts in the mind. When we suppress emotions like anger or resentment, they create blockages in our energy, eventually showing up as illnesses,” she explains.

“Holding onto negativity is like carrying a burning coal—it only hurts you. Yoga teaches us how to release rather than accumulate.”

She also debunks the notion that finding life's purpose is a grand, once-in-a-lifetime discovery. Instead, she believes it's something that exists in everyday moments.

"Eat With Purpose..."

"People chase purpose as if it's something external, but yoga teaches us to find meaning in every action. Eat with purpose, speak with purpose, and work with purpose. That's true mindfulness.”

Her insights serve as a powerful reminder that yoga isn't just about performing postures—it's a way of thinking, living, and evolving. “If you truly want to practice yoga, start with your mind. The physical benefits will follow."
