When it comes to cooking, even minor errors can greatly affect your health. According to Dimple Jangda, a health expert, two key things that should be avoided in your kitchen to maintain healthy meals free of harmful compounds are as follows:
1. Overheating Oils
One common mistake is overheating oils during cooking. When oil becomes too hot, it produces harmful compounds like acrolein. This chemical has been linked to cancer and also increases free radicals in your food, thus leading to inflammation in your body.
To avoid this, use oils with a high smoke point. Coconut oil, avocado oil, and ghee are all excellent cooking options. These oils can withstand high temperatures without deteriorating into harmful chemicals.
Also, never reheat oil. When you reheat oil, its toxicity level goes up nearly by 500%. This actually means that with each successive use of oil, the danger of such harmful compounds as acrolein in your body increases, thereby elevating the chances of cancer.
Foods that do not need high temperatures can be consumed by using cold-pressed olive oil and sesame oil since they have a low smoking point and are good for salad dressing.
2) Avoid Burnt or Charred Food
The next error should be avoided, that is, burned or charred food. Food that is burnt or charred contains acrylamide, a harmful substance created by overcooking or burning. Acrylamide has also been linked to cancer.
To prevent this, always remove any burnt or overcooked parts of your food. It's best to cook food lightly, so try boiling, steaming, blanching, or lightly baking your meals. This way, you'll avoid the harmful effects of acrylamide.
Also, choosing high-quality oils with a high smoke point can help keep your food from becoming excessively charred or burnt during cooking.
Lastly, to ensure healthier cooking, ensure that you never overheat oils and avoid consuming burnt food. With simple changes such as these, you will always enjoy the most deliciously healthy meals in proper bodies that help protect against health risks.
