Acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux (GER), is a condition where stomach acid flows backwards into the oesophagus, causing irritation and discomfort. Symptoms may include heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, and difficulty swallowing. Various types of food can cause acid reflux and worsen the situation. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist, recommends four foods that individuals facing acid reflux problems should avoid.
Lemon Water
Despite its refreshing taste, Lemon water is highly acidic and can potentially exacerbate symptoms of acid reflux. The acidity in lemon water may contribute to the irritation of the oesophagus, leading to discomfort for individuals experiencing acid reflux issues. As a result, those prone to acid reflux are often advised to limit their intake of acidic beverages like lemon water to alleviate symptoms and prevent further irritation of the digestive system.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar, though touted for various health benefits, is highly acidic and can lead to adverse reactions in individuals dealing with acid reflux. The acidity in apple cider vinegar can potentially exacerbate symptoms and irritate the oesophagus, making it a common trigger for those prone to acid reflux discomfort. Consequently, individuals experiencing acid reflux issues are often advised to be cautious with acidic substances like apple cider vinegar to manage and mitigate their symptoms effectively.
Honey
Honey, despite its numerous health benefits, can pose challenges for individuals dealing with acid reflux due to its high sugar content. Excessive consumption of sugary substances, including honey, may contribute to the aggravation of acid reflux symptoms. Those with acid reflux concerns should moderate their honey intake and be mindful of their overall sugar consumption to manage the condition and promote digestive well-being effectively.
Peppermint
Peppermint, while often enjoyed for its refreshing flavour, can have a relaxing effect on the lower oesophagal sphincter (LES), the muscular valve that separates the stomach from the oesophagus. This relaxation of the LES may lead to the reversal of stomach acid flow into the oesophagus, contributing to the worsening of acid reflux symptoms. Individuals prone to acid reflux should be cautious with peppermint consumption to prevent potential exacerbation of their condition.
Those who often experience acid reflux should avoid these food items and focus on a healthy diet that keeps their digestive system calm.
