In the race to imitate Western culture, we are buying into consumerism more than ever. Finance influencer Neha Nagar recently pointed out how we have adopted Western trends to the point that it's affecting our savings and lifestyle. Many of us are purchasing items we don't really need, just because they are available and look trendy. One common example is the craze for “organizers” that we see everywhere. But do we really need to buy these? Simple old boxes could serve the same purpose.
Mass-Produced Products vs. Homemade Solutions
Things that our parents used to manufacture by hand are now mass-produced by businesses. Whether it's a basic kitchen utensil or a storage box, these items were originally made with care and creativity. These days, they are made cheaply and offered for sale online. Even though these goods may be affordable initially, they frequently increase over time and drain our savings.
Mindful Use of Resources
As our elders, especially our grandmothers (nani), used to say, "Account for every drop; don't waste water." This Sage advice is applicable to our daily resource usage. We can utilize existing reusable bags for shopping instead of purchasing new plastic ones. It is preferable to spend money on basic, long-lasting clothing rather than trendy items.
Avoid the EMI Trap
We are surrounded by convenient shopping options these days, such as free EMIs and 10-minute delivery times. Despite their seeming convenience, these choices frequently result in a lot of spending. To protect your savings, it's essential to avoid the temptation to buy things on a whim.
Pledge to Buy Only What You Need
This month, make a pledge to buy only the things you truly need. Focus on mindful spending and avoid the show-off culture. Small, conscious changes can help you save money, reduce waste, and lead to a more fulfilling life.
