Decoding Overbooking and Compensation upto 20,000 rupees with CA Jay Desai

What is Overbooking?

Sharing an incident from his flight from Jaipur to Ahmedabad, Jay informed the audience about overbooking. To explain overbooking, Jay illustrated that if there are 100 seats on an airplane, the airline usually sells around 110 seats. It is because, as per studies, 5 to 15% of passengers do not show up on the day of the flight. It is pretty legal too.

On his flight from Jaipur to Ahmedabad, Jay received a message from Indigo Airlines. They were looking for volunteers to switch to another flight scheduled after the actual flight. Whenever you receive such a message, it means that your flight has been overbooked.

Compensation

Overbooking is an airline's way of ensuring they have no empty seats at take-off. But if no one decides to take the next flight, someone will be denied boarding the flight. To save his viewers from such a scenario, Jay shared some compensation rules by the Passenger Charter of Rights issued by DGCA. If one is denied boarding a flight due to overbooking, the passenger is entitled to compensation of 200% of their basic fare up to 10,000 rupees if the next flight is within 24 hours. However, the compensation increases to 400% up to 20,000 rupees if the next flight is after 24 hours.
