- Big sale or big scam?
Finance influencer CA Nikita Jindal recently shared her experience of not shopping from popular online platforms like Myntra, Ajio, and Amazon for a month. Here's what she discovered:
Impulse Purchases Disappeared
Nikita admitted that she often opened shopping apps just to browse. But the tempting messages like “Only 3 left in stock” or “Sale ending soon” would make her buy things she didn't need. A ₹999 top or a ₹699 shirt would end up in her cart because of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). Once she stopped visiting these apps, these unnecessary purchases vanished!
Hidden Treasures in Her Wardrobe
When she took a break from shopping, she explored her wardrobe and found many clothes she had forgotten about—some still with tags on! She realized that the "must-have" basics she bought due to influencer recommendations were things she already owned.
Sales Are Mostly Traps
If you think sales are rare, think again! Every 10-15 days, there's always a “BIG SALE.” The discounts make you feel like you're getting a great deal, but the truth is, the same prices come back later. So, that rush to buy? It's just clever marketing.
Instagram & Reels Fueled Her Shopping
She observed that the majority of her purchase decisions were led by Instagram Reels, particularly videos such as "5 Amazon Must-Haves" or "Ajio Hauls Under ₹499." These videos convinced her to purchase fashionable products that she did not actually need. After she disengaged with such content, her shopping impulse decreased.
She Saved ₹8K-10K in One Month
A ₹399 top here, a ₹1299 dress there—small purchases add up quickly. By avoiding shopping apps, her expenses dropped, and she felt more in control of her money.
A Simple Trick to Avoid Shopping
Instead of shopping, she tried styling her existing clothes in different ways. This helped her realize how much she already had.
Nikita's experience shows us that shopping apps are created to make us unnecessarily spend. When you stop, you get to know that 80% of what you bought was never actually necessary!
