Highlights
  • SPF alone isn't enough-PA+++ is essential for Indian skin.
  • Ignore the front labels, and check ingredients on the back.
  • Some top-rated sunscreens are actually just water with no protection.

In a very powerful and much-needed skincare reality check, fashion creator and beauty enthusiast Ishita Mangal is strongly urging Indians to rethink how they should buy sunscreen. In her viral video, she reveals a quite shocking truth: many sunscreens sold in India are just mere water with no real SPF or PA protection.

While SPF (Sun Protection Factor) has been much hyped in the beauty industry, Ishita explains that SPF is much more critical for the white skin, which lacks melanin.

Indian skin, on the other hand, has much more melanin that offers some natural UVB protection— so the real danger wholly lies in the UVA rays, which penetrate more deeper and cause premature aging and pigmentation. So this is where PA+++ comes in.

“Buy any SPF,” says Ishita, “but make sure it has PA+++,” Ishita says.

She goes on to specially highlight how brands often mislead by printing flashy claims on the front of their packaging, while the back label often reveals the real story— or maybe lack thereof. In fact, she also shares that the #1 bestselling sunscreen on Amazon India platform at one point had zero active protection ie. no SPF, no PA, just water.

Her advice? Make sure to always flip the label, check for PA rating, and look for the actual protective ingredients like zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, avobenzone, and others. Don't rely solely on influencer promotions unless they genuinely evaluate their formulation.

Ishita's PSA is a reminder that education beats the endorsement— and Indian consumers deserve more better skincare awareness.

Key Points

  • SPF alone isn't enough for Indian skin— always look for PA+++ to block the UVA rays.
  • Some top-rated sunscreens are just water— check the back label for their real ingredients.
  • Don't fall for front-label marketing— always read the ingredient list before buying.
  • Always be mindful of influencer promotions— formulation matters more than the popularity.
