This poignant statement encapsulates the profound joy and fear that every parent experiences. As we strive to protect our children and be there for them at all times, there are inevitable moments when they find themselves alone, navigating life's challenges. During these crucial times, they draw upon the values and guidance we have instilled in them – a silent reliance on the foundation we have laid.

As mature adults, we might dismiss a child's disappointment over a failed exam, a missed job opportunity, or a broken relationship as trivial. Yet, we forget that we were once their age, and those seemingly insignificant events felt like the end of the world. Our younger selves attached immense importance to things that, in hindsight, hold little significance in the grand tapestry of life.

Devika Nagpal, an Inclusion and capacity-building expert with 18+ years of experience, says “To nurture children's self-worth, parents or caregivers need to provide unwavering support, genuine appreciation, and love. Keeping open lines of communication, listening without judgment, and emphasizing their strengths instead of dwelling on weaknesses can greatly enhance the parent-child relationship."

Here are some ways of dealing with our children:

Listening Intently: When children express themselves, we must pay attention, picking up on their emotions and unspoken cues. Providing undivided attention without distractions is key. Pallavi Poojari-Mohindra, Founder and CEO of The Nurturant, says that “Listen to their little talk when they are little. Listen to what and how they speak to themselves and their toys while they are deep in play. Listen not just with your ears but more so with your eyes. Listen without dismissing their big feelings or quick fixing it or standing in judgement and shaming them. This listening is what sets the tone of your relationship for the future because they know that your doors will always remain open for them as teenagers and adults should they need you.”

Judgment-Free Conversations: Reacting impulsively when we hear something from our children can hinder open communication. Instead, internalize their words and respond thoughtfully. Pallavi further adds that “Our interactions today shape how they will talk to themselves tomorrow and influence generational cycles.” By fostering a non-judgmental environment, we encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings freely.

Teaching Moments: Life provides countless teaching moments. Whether inspired by movies, real-life situations, or people around us, we can use these instances to impart valuable life lessons. Engage your child in discussions about hypothetical scenarios, asking for their perspective. Share your own reactions and reasoning without being preachy. These conversations deepen understanding and strengthen your bond.

In the end, instilling unwavering confidence in our children – assuring them that no problem is insurmountable – remains paramount. As parents, we stand by them, ready to offer unconditional support and love. Let your child know this and do not forget to give your child a tight hug today and whisper, I love you.
